At a special event at the Laser Research Center of the University of Szeged, unique Gömböc gifts were presented to Nobel laureates. The Gömböc is the first known convex, homogeneous object with only one stable and one unstable equilibrium point. Anne L’Huillier’s Gömböc features the number 170, honoring the 170 attosecond pulse achieved by the Lund group in 2004. Ferenc Krausz’s Gömböc displays the number 80, commemorating his 80 attosecond pulses from 2008, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records.

The possibility of the Gömböc’s existence was first proposed in 1995 but only proven ten years later, similar to the discovery of attosecond pulses.

Szeged proudly celebrated Anne L’Huillier and Ferenc Krausz, who participated in the Attosecond Symposium and milestone unveiling at the ELI ALPS Laser Research Center. The event honored the greatest scientific achievements of recent years.

Anne L’Huillier, a professor at the Lund University Department of Atomic Physics, presented the lecture “The Road to Attosecond Pulses,” showcasing the field’s development and research results. She has a close professional relationship with the Szeged center, where she played a significant role in developing the Sylos GHHG laser.

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier for experimental methods that generate attosecond light pulses to study electron dynamics. Attosecond physics is a major focus of ELI ALPS’s research profile, highlighting significant advancements in the field.

The milestone not only honored the Nobel laureates but also marked an important event in the research center’s scientific history. Katalin Varjú, Scientific Director of ELI ALPS, expressed the honor of celebrating the Nobel-recognized achievements alongside a milestone of the research center.

Dr. Katalin Karikó, a key figure in mRNA-based vaccine research, also began her scientific career in Szeged. Her groundbreaking work in combating global pandemics underscores the crucial role of scientific research in addressing global challenges.

Szeged proudly welcomes the Nobel laureates who have contributed to the latest breakthroughs in science and the world-class operation of ELI ALPS. The event symbolizes the scientific community’s dedication to future research challenges.

In 2007, the Gömböc made its debut on the cover of Mathematical Intelligencer, and it was hailed by the New York Times as one of the 70 most interesting inventions of the year. In the coming decade this mathematical discovery has not only inspired top scientists, engineers and artists but also helped to shed light on some of Nature’s intriguing mysteries.

What is the Gömböc?

The Gömböc, this special geometric shape, is a result of an ingenious mathematical question asked by one of the most influential mathematicians of the 20th century, Vladimir Igorevich Arnold: can convex, homogeneous objects with just two balance points exist? The Gömböc is the first known such shape and it self-rights on a horizontal surface like a weeble, however, unlike the toy, it has no added bottom weight.

Prestigious universities (e.g. Princeton, Cambridge, Heidelberg, Cornell, Oxford, Berkeley, Tokyo, Sorbonne and Harvard) and collections (e.g. Windsor Castle, the Hungarian National Museum) have put uniquely numbered Gömböc models on permanent exhibit. The Gömböc motivated the development of a geometrical theory with applications ranging from biology through palaeontology to geophysics and planetology, the latter not only helping NASA to identify ancient rivers on the Red Planet but also explaining the spaceship-like shape of the first interstellar asteroid ‘Oumuamua. The Gömböc shape drove cutting-edge innovation in robotics and drug delivery and it inspired not only the development of the simulation software for the sailing yacht winning 2017 America’s Cup but also the work of leading contemporary conceptual artist Ryan Gander.

“The Gömböc appears to be on the edge of physical reality .It exists, but barely so” describes co-inventor Gábor Domokos the extreme sensitivity of the shape for which the manufacturing tolerances are daunting, requiring a precision of 1/100mm for a Gömböc with maximal diameter of 100mm. In addition to its scientific significance, the Gömböc has become a popular and prestigious gift for businesses and individuals. Gömböc models are available in aluminum, transparent and black plexiglass, stainless steel, and bronze at https://gomboc-shop.com/en.

For the upcoming holidays this special ornament, which is on the border of science and art, can be a precious gift.

WEBSHOP

RNA-based vaccines were key elements in the fight against coronavirus, while also bringing sucessful protection against cancerous and hereditary diseases within reach. The first vaccines using this technology were launched in 2020, as a result of a collaboration between the companies Pfizer and Biontech. The scientists behind the technology are Drew Weissman and Katalin Karikó, a Hungarian biochemist who started her research in the US in 1990. Karikó has recieved numerous awards in the past two years, and according to professionals, she might stand a chance in winning the Nobel-Prize.

Gábor Domokos and Péter Várkonyi, working in a seemingly completely different field from Karikó, have played a pivotal role in the development of insulin capsules for diabetics. The pill has originated by the researchers of the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University. It substitutes the inconvenience of daily injections, as it allows the ingredients to enter the bloodstream directly through the stomach lining, avoiding the harmful effects of stomach acid.

For years, scientific interest has been focused on alternative solutions to the traditionally injectable substances. On the 31th of January, MIT News reported on the latest stage of development, nominally an oral capsule that they think could replace mRNA vaccines altogether. In their article, chemical engineer Robert Langer and gastroenterologist Giovanni Traverso refer to the work of Katalin Karikó, Gábor Domokos and Péter Várkonyi. In terms of mechanics, the capsule is able to be absorbed in the right part of the stomach by relying solely on gravity due to its correct shape and weight distribution. The researchers considered the shape and weight distribution of the Gömböc to be the most suitable for this purpose.

I don’t think it takes much imagination to understand how much advantage oral vaccines have over vaccine injections. You don’t even need to go to the doctor, you just have to take it yourself. People would much rather swallow anything than allow themselves to be stung. There is also much less resistance to vaccines in oral cases ,Katalin Kariko told Qubit journalists about the role of oral vaccines. On the unexpected meeting of mRNA technology and the mono-monostatic body, she stated; I have the Gömböc on my shelf and I’m playing around with it a lot myself. to understand what it’s all about.

The first functioning Gömböc model 001 was gifted by its founders to Vladimir Arnold, the Russian mathematician, who conjectured and inspired this innovation. The gift was given as an acknowledgment of his work as the question whether Gömböc-type objects exist or not was posed by him. Since then, the unique Hungarian innovation has become a quality gift in the science, business, and diplomacy community.

When should we give gifts in business?

Gifts can be given for successful collaborations, the arrival of foreign delegates, or as the appreciation or acknowledgment of employees. Furthermore, they can be distributed at conferences as guest gifts, prizes or they can be awarded on events organized by the company.

Picking the right corporate gift

Knowing our clients’ interests can be a significant advantage when it comes to picking the right gift. If we are not in this position, it is a great opportunity to initiate a call and get to know them better to be able to tailor our gift to their needs. If we still lack this information, we can pick an item that is unique and represents a great value for us. For those companies that aim to stand out from the crowd, we advise avoiding conventional ideas that the client has probably received many by now. Furthermore, it is important to pay attention to the quality of the gift and it is recommended to lose the idea of the cheap, cheesy, and tawdry gifts ideas. Rather, we should choose a gift that expresses the values of our company.
A further question that arises when it comes to gift picking is the amount of joy we would like to give to our client. How long and what effect will our gift have on them? Who will see our gift? In a field when clients are reached through recommendations, like the real estate industry, choose something that not only the client but their family and friends can also see.

Gifting Unique items

We can give our company’s products to clients as well as other company’s products printed with our own logo. If we decide to go with an addressed business gift, the discrete representation of the logo by engraving it on its surface is highly suggested. With large, ostentatious logos, we can get the opposite result, therefore we should aim for a smaller size to show the client that we are there without getting the feeling of promotion. With a tailored message or the reminisce of memory with the client we can increase our thoughtfulness.

Packaging

The quality of the product is complemented by its packaging and proper delivery. The joy of opening a present is one of those moments when clients experience the appreciation and respect from our company.

+1

Do not necessary concentrate gift giving to the end of the year / Christmas. Instead, choose another date to stand out of the crowd and show our clients their importance throughout the year.

Yet the scientists now say that Mother Nature may have beaten them in the race after all. They have noticed that the Gomboc closely resembles the shell of a tortoise or a beetle, creatures whose round-shelled backs help them right themselves when flipped over. “We discovered it with mathematics,” Domokos notes, “but evolution got there first.”

Prof. Gabor Domokos of the Gömböc helds lecture ’The Gömböc, the Turtle and the Evolution of Shape’at the University of Oxford

Abstract of the lecture
In 1995, celebrated Russian mathematician V.I. Arnold conjectured that, contrary to common belief, convex, homogeneous solids with just two static balance points (“weebles without a bottom weight”) may exist. Ten years later, based on a constructive proof, the first such object, dubbed “Gömböc”, was built. In the process leading to the discovery, several curious properties of the shape emerged and evidently some tropical turtles had evolved similar shells for the purpose of self-righting.
This Public Lecture will describe those properties as well as explain the journey of discovery, the mathematics behind the journey, the parallels with molecular biology and the latest Gömböc thinking, most notably Arnold’s second major conjecture, namely that the Gömböc in Nature is not the origin, rather the ultimate goal of shape evolution.

https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/node/14153
